Additional Demon Lords

It seems like every week now, we’re getting more demon lords to add to the list. Previously, we had Rimuru, Clayman, Carrion, Frey, Cromwell, Valentine, Ramiris, Milim, Guy, and Kazaream, making 10 known demon lords.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 Part 2 Episode 45 introduces us to three additional demon lords. These are Lurus/Milis, Dagruel, and Dino. So, there are 13 current demon lords despite the official title of the demon lords claiming that there are only 10.

How does this work? Well, the 10 official demon lords are Clayman, Carrion, Frey, Cromwell, Valentine, Ramiris, Milim, Guy, Dagruel, and Dino. Rimuru is brand new, so he isn’t counted yet. And as for Kazaream and Lurus/Milis, while they’re still alive, they’re thought to be dead.

Starting with Lurus/Milis the first thing of note is that we don’t actually know her name. But, we know Valentine took over her domain and she’s now apparently serving under him. My guess is that she’s the one who turned him into a vampire and is pulling the strings from behind the scenes.

Dagruel is a giant and he’s strong enough to have fought Veldora multiple times. Other than that, we don’t really know anything about him. Though, I don’t believe we saw him bring any attendants. So perhaps he’s more of a loner.

And lastly, we have Dino, who much to my disappointment isn’t a dinosaur. As Ramiris explains, Dino is the only demon lord who’s lazier than she is. And while she doesn’t want to be compared to him in any way, it seems like the two of them are on good terms. They tease each other, but it’s all in good fun.

Adalman the Faithless

While Walpurgis is starting, Shuna, Souei, and Hakurou make their way towards Clayman’s castle. Before they reach it, however, they’re surrounded by an army of the undead led by one of Clayman’s Five Fingers, Adalman, the Index Finger.

Considering how the fight against the previous member of the Five Fingers went, I knew from the start that Adalman wasn’t going to be a major threat. The oni who serve under Rimuru are all far stronger than Clayman’s Fingers.

But, I can’t say that I was expecting how this fight would progress. In fact, I was just as shocked as Adalman was when Shuna started using holy magic. After all, holy magic is supposed to be what humans who are part of the church use to eradicate monsters.

However, after only a few seconds of thought, I realized that Shuna’s use of holy magic actually makes sense. She literally wears the outfit of a shrine maiden.

I can’t really say I was a fan of this fight or of Adalman himself, though. Apparently when he became undead he just never tried to use holy magic and assumed that he wasn’t able to because he was no longer human. That was a pretty bad development.

But what made it worse was that Shuna’s explanation didn’t really add up with what Adalman said. He claims to have lost faith in his god before his death and even now he’s searching for a new god. But Shuna says anyone who has faith can use holy magic regardless of their race.

So, how was Adalman able to use holy magic again? Even if he now realizes that he can use it as an undead, he’s already admitted to having lost his faith. So what’s the source of his newly rediscovered holy magic? Does it simply rely on faith in one’s ability to use it?

Walpurgisnacht

Moving back over to Walpurgis, there are a few interesting things we saw. Of course, one of them is that Valentine’s maid has a higher magic output than him, which is why it’s assumed that she’s actually the true demon lord of the two.

What we don’t know is where exactly that places Valentine among the demon lords. He’s clearly strong. But is he even a real demon lord? Or is he like Clayman in that he’s a demon lord in name only while his master is the one with the actual title?

The other attendant who turned heads was accompanying my favorite demon lord, Frey. I don’t believe we’ve seen Carrion in his beast form yet. But, it’s heavily implied that the beastman who shows up to Walpurgis with Frey is Carrion.

We don’t know what happened to Carrion after he was defeated by Milim and Frey. But it does make a lot more sense for him to have become a captive than for him to have been killed. Clayman, specifically, wouldn’t want to waste such a powerful pawn.

My assumption is that Carrion is being controlled by Frey in the same way that Milim is being controlled by Clayman. However, if that really is Carrion, it’s interesting that Frey is making him act as her assistant rather than in his role as a demon lord.

Isn’t the whole purpose of controlling Milim so that Clayman has more sway at Walpurgis? Using Carrion in the same way seems like it would be beneficial.

And imagine if Milim showed up with Clayman and just stood by the door rather than taking her seat at the table, everyone would be confused. So why isn’t the same happening with Carrion? Surely the other demon lords know what Carrion looks like.

Dragon Faithful

In my review of Episode 43, I made some general predictions about how the three main battles were going to go. Some of these predictions were correct, while others weren’t as correct. So, let’s look at the fight featuring Suphia and Gabiru first.

I said that I felt like this fight could go either way. Gabiru and Suphia aren’t the strongest, but they’re strong enough. And as for Middray and Hermes, we didn’t really have a good sense of their strength just yet. I also mentioned that Suphia might lose, and as it turned out, that’s what happened.

However, I assumed that Gabiru would have to rescue Suphia and flee. That didn’t happen. Instead, while Suphia was easily defeated by Middray, Hermes was easily defeated by Gabiru. So, I think since their fight ended 1-1, my guess that it could have gone either way was pretty close.

I will say, though, that Middray probably could have defeated both Suphia and Gabiru at the same time if they kept fighting. In the end, it wouldn’t have been all that close, so my prediction is only “correct” because the fight ended when it did.

The outcome of the fight aside, we also learned that the Dragon Faithful — Milim’s followers — are actually descendants of dragons themselves. Furthermore, they’re very similar to the Dragonewts who take on human forms.

And, something Middray mentions is that his subordinates are too weak to transform into their dragon forms. So by that logic, we can assume that a powerful descendant of dragons, like himself or Milim, can. I don’t believe we’ve seen Milim’s full dragon form yet.

Oh, and Middray’s claim of being as strong as Milim herself was bold

Albis the Majin

I’m sure it was explained early on in the series, but I’m still not exactly sure what a majin is within the context of TenSura. It’s someone who has a large amount of magical power and who tends to align themselves with a demon lord.

I guess anyone can just be born as a majin? Since Albis is a majin, we know that the title isn’t solely used for humans who have a high magic potential. But have we met any other majin so far who weren’t human? Albis is the only one I can think of.

Actually, Middray might have been stated to be a majin within this episode. I don’t remember, and I’m not going to go back to check. But if he was, then he’d be another non-human majin. And I guess we don’t know what Laplace, Tear, and Footman actually are.

As far as I know, Yamza is a human majin. But, he’s not a very strong majin, as we saw. Albis is far stronger than he is (was?). And if you consider that someone like Benimaru is infinitely stronger than Albis, would that mean Benimaru counts as a majin?

Anyway, I correctly predicted that Albis was going to defeat Yamza. That was the battle I was most confident in the outcome of considering we got to see the first part of the fight in the previous episode. But what I didn’t expect was for Yamza to be killed.

I fully expected him to surrender to Albis, and that’s exactly what he did. But Clayman didn’t take this betrayal very well and proceeded to use Yamza’s body to summon a piece of the calamity Charybdis. When this happened, Hermes stated Yamza’s soul was destroyed — and since Charybdis was also destroyed, I’m pretty sure he’s dead.

Benimaru is Overpowered

Obviously, Benimaru is weaker than Rimuru, and therefore I guess weaker than some of the other demon lords. I was going to say that Milim is an example of a demon lord who’s stronger than Benimaru. But, the more I think about it, the less sure I am that that’s the case.

I don’t remember all that much from the first season and the first part of the second, as has probably become clear from both this review and my previous reviews of this half of the season. But, I’m fairly sure that although Milim got the credit for defeating Charybdis, it was actually Rimuru.

Why is this important? Simply because it would mean Rimuru is stronger than Milim. So Benimaru can be both weaker than Rimuru and stronger than Milim without messing up how they compare to each other. But, there’s more to it than that.

Remember how Middray claimed that he was on par with Milim? What if he wasn’t exaggerating? It would mean that someone as strong as Milim considered a small fragment of Charybdis to be a threat. And who easily defeated that piece of Charybdis? Benimaru.

I know that when Benimaru and Middray come face to face, they treat each other as somewhat equals. However, I’m going to give Benimaru the advantage specifically because he defeated the Charybdis fragment in two attacks.

Basically, what I’m getting at is that Benimaru is on par with if not stronger than one of the demon lords who’s already been stated to be one of the strongest. For all intents and purposes, Benimaru is a demon lord. He’s one of those “fake” demon lords like Clayman.

I also noticed that Clayman has a lot of oni working for him. So will they follow Benimaru instead once Clayman is defeated?

Clayman the Puppet Master

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 Part 2 Episode 43 was an alright episode. I think I would have enjoyed it more if TenSura actually had good fight scenes, which it doesn’t. Fights are built up and then don’t deliver.

One such fight was between Albis of the Three Beastketeers and Yamza of the Five Fingers. I know that we only got the first part of their fight and that there’s likely going to be more in the next episode. But I still don’t have faith that the next part of their fight is going to be any better.

Anyway, these are two pretty cool characters whom I’d like to see get a well-animated fight. Not only is Albis the leader of the Beastketeers, meaning that she’s probably the second strongest person in Eurazania, but it was revealed that she’s a Majin.

As for Yamza, he has a fairly cool character design. But what I like more about him is his personality. When he was first introduced, I didn’t think much of him. However, it’s been revealed that he’s actually a fairly competent strategist and leader.

Not only is he commanding Clayman’s army, but he’s coming up with backup plans on the fly for not just the battle, but his survival afterward. Defeat isn’t an option for Yamza because it means death or becoming nothing more than a puppet as Milim is currently.

So once things start going poorly for him, Yamza decides he needs to call in a powerful reinforcement (which fails). We also see that he begins considering what would happen if he abandoned Clayman and allied himself with another demon lord.

Yamza’s consideration of abandoning Clayman didn’t come off as him being a coward to me, though. It was more like, “why should he die for Clayman’s failed attempt at becoming a true demon lord?”

Decisive Victory

Obviously, things are going pretty well for Rimuru’s army right now. The main forces of his army are decimating the main forces of Clayman’s army, Albis and Gobta are fighting Yamza, Phobio and Geld are up against Tear and Footman, and Suphia and Gabiru are heading towards Milim’s followers.

The outcome of the main battle is pretty clear — Tempest is going to win. But as I pointed out in my review of Episode 41, that battle doesn’t really matter. Regardless of which army wins, the true winner is whichever side takes out the opposing commanders.

Of the fights between the commanders, I think the easiest victory for Tempest is going to be the fight against Yamza. He seems pretty cornered by Albis and Gobta. And on top of that, I think he’d surrender before dying on the battlefield.

The fight against Milim’s followers is one I could honestly see going either way. I do feel like the younger one of Milim’s followers present is going to end up joining Tempest later on. So even if they beat Suphia and Gabiru now, it’s not going to be a huge deal.

Tear and Footman are a problem. I don’t necessarily think Phobio and Geld are going to lose, but I don’t think they’re going to win either. I could see Gabiru having to drag Suphia away from their battle. Here, Tear and Footman will probably escape, not defeat Phobio and Geld.

Now, I do want to point out that Benimaru claims to have received a new skill that allows him to foresee everything the enemy is going to do in battle. For this reason, he thinks victory is assured. I don’t think that’s necessarily the case, though.

I mean, Benimaru hasn’t even started fighting, and he’s easily the strongest person there. But at the same time, anything could happen. Milim might even show up, which would be a huge issue for Tempest.

Tear and Footman

The fight I think could actually get some decent animation is the one against Tear and Footman. Why? Simply because it involves Geld. I’m not really sure why, but Geld is kind of the only character who regularly gets good art and animation in TenSura.

Whenever Geld has his armor on, he just seems to be drawn in more detail than anyone else — and I’m all here for it. Also, we previously got a cool scene of Geld showing what he’s capable of in Episode 34. Hopefully, we get something else like that here.

It’s hard to say where Geld falls in the power rankings of Tempest’s warriors. Rimuru, Veldora, Benimaru, and whatever the demon butler’s name is are probably stronger than him. But I’d put Geld at the same level as the other oni besides Benimaru (I know they’re called something else now).

Tear and Footman should be pretty strong opponents. In fact, I’d say that they’re strong enough that Phobio will have to be hard carried by Geld in this fight. After all, we saw Footman was able to stop Geld’s sword and then hit him hard enough to send him flying backward.

I’m not sure what Tear can do, though. Her abilities may have been revealed already in the first part of this season, or even the first season. However, if they were, I don’t remember. So I’m looking forward to seeing what she’s capable of and how she fights against Phobio while Geld and Footman go at it.

I’m still going to predict that Geld is going to go on a rampage and Tear and Footman are going to have to flee — and that they’ll do so successfully.

Conclusion

Milim’s Friends

Going into this episode, I was fully expecting it to be pretty boring. After all, I haven’t been impressed with any of the other episodes from Season 2 Part 2 so far. But, TenSura Episode 42 was actually a surprisingly good episode for what it was.

At the start of the episode, we learn that demon lords Milim and Frey are friends — at least as far as Milim is concerned. Milim is comfortable enough to barge into Frey’s room and brag about the new gloves she got from Rimuru, so they have to be pretty close.

There’s also the fact that Frey calls Milim her friend (which should be taken with a grain of salt). Of course, she’s going to call Milim her friend to her face. But the general way she seems to talk to and think about Milim implies it to be somewhat true.

And, if all of that wasn’t enough evidence that Milim and Frey are friends (to an extent), Frey also denies Clayman’s claim that she’s helping him because she hates Milim. Yes, she betrayed Milim. But she did so only because she owed Clayman.

You could argue that a betrayal is still a betrayal and that it shows Frey doesn’t really care about Milim all that much. But Frey also recognized that Clayman probably won’t be around for much longer since he’s getting on the bad side of multiple demon lords.

The way I see it, Frey betrayed Milim while knowing full well that Milim would come out the other side of this betrayal just fine. She betrayed Milim, but only so that she could watch Clayman be destroyed by his own ambition. Frey clearly isn’t a fan of Clayman.

Frey is the Best Demon Lord

I think before this episode I would have said that Milim is the best demon lord, and also best girl, of the series. But, now that we’ve actually seen Frey more than just her showing up to help kill Carrion, I no longer think that’s the case.

Frey is the best demon lord, and also best girl, of TenSura now. Just look at her character design and try to tell me that she isn’t the best girl of the entire series. There’s literally nobody else who even comes close to her as far as I’m concerned.

Her thigh-highs are perfect. I love her bodysuit. Her detached sleeves are cute. The gem on her forehead makes her face less bland. She has a nice smile. Her haircut is pretty. There’s literal gold on the tips of her wings. And, just like Shakira, her hips don’t lie.

The only thing I would change about Frey’s character design is the way her chest spreads out to the sides. I’m not a huge fan of when female outfits do that, but considering the rest of her character design, I’ll let it slide this time.

Although her character design is probably the thing I like most about Frey, I do like her personality as seen in this episode as well. Despite the fact that she seemingly betrayed Milim, I do like that she was nice to Milim.

I’m pretty sure that Milim doesn’t have many friends aside from Rimuru, so it’s nice to see that Frey is her friend too. Maybe once Clayman has been defeated and Milim is back to normal, we’ll get to see more of Frey and Milim interacting with each other.

Typically I don’t enjoy random slice-of-life content in series like this, but I don’t think I’d mind it if it was focused on those two.

Guy Crimson

In my review of Episode 39, I went over the concept that there are “10 great demon lords” in the world, and how that designation probably doesn’t include Rimuru since he just awoke. Well, if we ignore Rimuru, we previously knew of eight demon lords.

To refresh your memory, these are Milim, Frey, Carrion, Clayman, Valentine, Cromwell, Ramiris, and Kazaream. Now, a ninth (tenth, if you count Rimuru) demon lord has been confirmed: Guy Crimson. So, there should be at least one more demon lord to be revealed.

Back in that review, I also suggested that Kazaream may not have been included in that count because they were thought to have been dead. But, now I feel like they were. Kazaream seems strong enough to be considered a “great” demon lord.

However, I now have my doubts about whether Clayman is included in that category. Clayman is referred to as a rookie demon lord in this episode, which seems to imply that he’s not one of the “greats.”

Milim and Guy are among the oldest and strongest, Valentine and Kazaream are implied to be very strong as well, Ramiris has the respect of Guy for some reason, and Carrion, Frey, and Cromwell seem to each be relatively powerful.

Considering what I’ve been saying about Clayman this whole time — that he’s a chump — and how the other demon lords treat him, I have a hard time believing he’s one of the 10 great demon lords. I mean, we already know he’s not even a “true” demon lord.

Also, one last thing I want to mention is that we were introduced to the White Ice Dragon Velzard, older sister of Veldora and one of the four true dragons. I’m going to guess Milim doesn’t count as one of the true dragons since she’s only half dragon.

Conclusion

Teleportation Magic

At the start of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 Part 2 Episode 41, Rimuru mentioned how he wished there was a way for him to quickly transport his army to the nation of Eurazania. I thought this was odd since teleportation magic seemed like it should exist in this world.

Well, it turns out I was right (as usual). Teleportation magic does exist and is generally used to transport goods from one place to another. Maybe that means we’ll see Rimuru use this to trade with other countries in the future.

But, during this initial explanation of teleportation magic, it was stated that it’s not a good idea to transport living creatures that way. This is because they receive an extremely high dosage of magicules during the process, which can kill them — much like radiation.

Now, once it was explained why living creatures can’t be transported using teleportation magic, I was ready to accept that as the end of it. It was a good explanation for why Rimuru can’t just teleport his army around. After all, that would have been overpowered, right?

Here’s the part of all this teleportation magic that I don’t like. This magic was introduced, shot down as a viable transportation method immediately, and then reversed course on that right after. It turns out you can transport people with this magic as long as you protect them from the magicules.

I don’t like when series set up a “law of the universe” and then immediately break it for plot convenience. The workaround for transporting people via teleportation is so simple that you’d have to imagine all the demon lords are already doing it.

Shion is Going to Ruin Everything

Continuing on with my complaints, let’s talk about Shion, the worst character in the entire series. As soon as she expressed interest in accompanying Rimuru to the Walpurgis, I knew it wasn’t going to end well. How could it with Shion involved?

I’ve said this a few times in the past, but there aren’t any good reasons for Shion’s existence in the series. Most often, she’s included solely as a gag character due to her horrible cooking skills and freakish physical strength. She rarely adds anything of value to a scene.

When Shion isn’t being used in a gag, her other most prominent role is as the person who ruins everything. This is on account of her below-average intelligence stat. She misunderstands situations and makes them worse, leaving Rimuru to clean up the mess.

I’m fully expecting Shion to do something wrong during the Walpurgis. The whole point of making an appearance there is to antagonize Clayman. But I get the feeling that Shion is going to end up getting on the bad side of one of the other demon lords as well — perhaps Valentine.

It’s also possible that she annoys all of the demon lords at the same time by constantly talking down to them and praising Rimuru. I’d imagine that wouldn’t go over too well with the demon lords who aren’t already on good terms with him.

Also, can we just take a moment to question Rimuru’s choices for who he’s bringing to the Walpurgis in general? Shion is obviously a bad choice, but Ranga? Why would Rimuru bring his pet dog instead of a real character? He should honestly show up with Veldora and Benimaru just to flex.

I know that he needs to leave strong combatants behind to protect the city, but he has teleportation magic if anything goes wrong.

The Eve of Battle

In series like this one where you have a handful of characters who are each considered the equivalent of hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of soldiers, I don’t understand the need for armies. Rimuru can defeat an army of 20,000 on his own, so what does he need an army for?

I understand the need for a few strong allies. Obviously, it would be bad if Rimuru went into battle alone and the opposing force had a few people who could fight against him on even terms. But I don’t see the point in bringing thousands of grunts.

The whole reason large armies exist is that every man counts when they’re all relatively equal. As soon as you have an extreme power imbalance, there’s no longer a need for a large army. Either they’re going to be wiped out by the opposing powerhouse, or they’re not going to end up having an effect on the battle anyway.

You could argue that overall, Rimuru’s army is stronger than your average army in this world. I don’t know if that’s actually the case. But at the same time, 90% of his army could be destroyed in an instant if they encounter a demon lord or even a majin.

As far as I’m concerned, there’s no situation in which the grunts of the army are going to be what turns the tide of the battle. They’re simply too weak to make a difference. It all comes down to whichever army takes out the enemy commander(s) first.

Consider this: If the opposing army has someone strong enough to defeat Rimuru, they’re probably strong enough to defeat all of his subordinates single-handedly too. After all, we know Rimuru is stronger than all of them.

Conclusion
