Playing with Princess Iris

KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! 3 Episode 3 was even better than the first two episodes of the season. Princess Iris is adorable and I want to see more of her going forward. Luckily, it looks like that will be the case.

I could have watched an entire episode of Kazuma playing with Iris. Her reactions to everything he said and did were great. And, of course, Kazuma himself is great. I loved the way he acted each morning when he woke up in the castle.

Based on what I saw in this episode, the change in location for this season was the right choice. In Season 2, I started to get a little bored. It didn’t feel different enough from Season 1. Then, we got the Legend of Crimson movie, which took place in the Crimson Demon Village, and that was great.

With this season taking place in the Royal Capital, it feels more like Legend of Crimson than Season 2. What more can be done with Axel at this point? It’s kind of just a staging ground for the party to head out from on different adventures.

The Royal Capital is an entirely new location with new characters, conflicts, and wacky scenarios for our favorite party to get into. That’s very important for comedy series. Comedy stops being funny real fast when the same joke is used too many times. A new setting can prevent that from happening.

More importantly, though, new characters can prevent things from getting too stale. That’s exactly what Princess Iris brings to the table. She’s very different from the three main girls of the series. And, she’s even different from any of the other side characters. She introduces a new dynamic to the series.

Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness to the Rescue

I was kind of expecting Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness to go to the castle to get Kazuma. After all, they need him more than he needs them. Kazuma would be completely fine spending the rest of his days playing with Iris.

But, without Kazuma, the rest of the party doesn’t function. Sure, Aqua’s a powerful Arch Priestess due to being a goddess. Megumin’s the genius of the Crimson Demons and an expert in the most powerful type of magic. And, Darkness is a Crusader who can tank any hit.

However, they all have major character flaws that prevent them from using their full strength. Kazuma’s the one who makes up for that, despite not being very powerful himself. I can’t imagine those three being able to complete a quest without Kazuma there to lead them. It just wouldn’t happen.

Even if they did manage to complete the quest, they’d lose money in the process. Aqua would cause a flood or Megumin would blow the wrong thing up. Then, they’d have to pay for the repairs, just as we saw during the cabbage episode from Season 1.

The fact that Darkness is a noble doesn’t even help, either. Yes, she can technically bail them out. But, that would likely come at the cost of her giving up adventuring herself. She’d have to agree to be married off to some other noble. And, that’s not something any of them want to happen.

What about the big reward the party is expecting to get from the Crimson Demon Village? Well, this is the Crimson Demon Village we’re talking about. Either the reward will never materialize or it won’t be much of a reward at all. I’m guessing it will be some dangerous relic they found in nearby ruins.

Catching the Noble Thief

Okay, so I know I said that the Royal Capital being the new location for this season is a good thing. But, there’s actually something I wanted (and expected) to happen instead. I wanted Kazuma to take Iris on an adventure.

Kazuma told her that she should get out from within the castle walls more often and experience the world. The problem with that is that Iris is a princess. Anywhere she goes, she needs her royal guards with her. That makes it difficult for her to have experiences like Kazuma and his party have.

So, what’s the solution? Well, I thought it would be Kazuma “kidnapping” Iris and bringing her back to Axel. Then, for the rest of the season, she’d be a member of the party before ultimately leaving to go back to the castle.

This wouldn’t change the location in which the series takes place. But, the inclusion of Iris into the party would have shaken things up enough to keep it interesting. That’s what I really wanted to happen; it could still happen to an extent if Iris helps catch the noble thief.

However, at this point, I’m not expecting it anymore. I don’t think she’s going to play a major role. Instead, she’s going to be another supporting character, like Chris. And, speaking of Chris, my prediction is that she’s the noble thief. After all, she’s the only thief character we know.

The last time we saw her, she pickpocketed an item that produced gold coins from Kazuma. That happened in Axel, but there’s no reason she has to always be in Axel. And, in case you forgot, she was originally introduced as Darkness’s friend. So, she could have a connection to nobles herself.

Final Thoughts

One Piece Episode 1101 Review

Luffy vs. Lucci – Round 2 (Continued)

One Piece Episode 1101 continues the fight between Luffy and Rob Lucci. But, for the most part, the animation during the continuation of this fight isn’t as good as in Episode 1100. Still, it’s good content.

Now, it was always obvious to me that Luffy was going to win this fight. It doesn’t matter that Lucci also has an awakened Devil Fruit. As I discussed in the previous review, Luffy’s Devil Fruit is simply stronger. The Cat-Cat Fruit Model: Leopard isn’t beating the Human-Human Fruit Model: Nika.

Lucci, for some reason, thought he stood a chance. However, by the end of the fight, he recognizes the difference in their power. He asks himself, “How powerful is he?!” And, I’d like to answer that question for Lucci. Luffy is powerful enough that he defeated Kaido and was named one of the Four Emperors.

Forget about the fact that fighting Luffy is a bad idea because he’s an Emperor of the Sea. The real reason fighting Luffy is a bad idea is because he defeated Kaido. You know, the “World’s Strongest Creature” Kaido. The guy so powerful that he can’t even kill himself when he tries.

Luffy beat that.

Sure, you can always argue that one Devil Fruit or character is strong or weak against another. You could have a rock-paper-scissors situation. But, this isn’t that. It’s not like Luffy had an advantage over Kaido and Lucci has an advantage over Luffy.

At the end of the day, there are only a handful of people who could defeat Luffy as he is now. We don’t know much about Shanks, but he might be able to. Blackbeard might be able to, as well. And, I’m going to say Im, too. The Admirals? Probably not one-on-one.

The Strongest Form of Humanity

We now know how the Seraphim are able to use Devil Fruit powers that already exist. They have special green blood that basically contains the DNA of the Devil Fruit. This is not the same as the SMILE fruits created by Caeser, which are artificial Devil Fruit.

Why does this difference matter? As Dr. Vegapunk says, creating artificial Devil Fruit only works on Zoan fruit, so far. And, as we’ve seen, the success rate isn’t very high. By using his green blood technology, Vegapunk has been able to replicate the powers of Paramecia fruit. Though, Logia fruit are still too complex.

In simple terms, why recreate the entire Devil Fruit when you could just recreate its ability? The only downside seems to be the cost. That’s why there are only a handful of Seraphim. It’s expensive to make the Seraphim themselves as well as the green blood.

Vegapunk also called the Seraphim the “Strongest form of humanity.” Is he right about that? I didn’t think so. Yes, they’re very robust. But, I have a feeling that they’re not actually stronger than their human counterparts. Like, are we assuming S-Hawk could beat Mihawk in a fight?

Well, at least, I thought that until we saw S-Snake interact with Chopper and Jinbe. Before this, I thought the Seraphim were little more than robots. It turns out that they actually have personalities — and S-Snake is adorable. If it’s S-Snake, I’ll gladly bow down to my new Seraphim overlord.

But, actually, the fact that the Seraphim have personalities is a big deal. The reason I thought the original humans would be stronger is because of their “human ingenuity.” For example, Mihawk could come up with a way to defeat S-Hawk. However, it now looks like the Seraphim can do that too.

I don’t know about you, but my favorite part of Episode 1101 was the Jinbe and Chopper content. It started with them thanking S-Snake for pointing them in the right direction. And, it continued through the end of the episode.

As I’m sure many One Piece fans have noticed, there are different groups within the Straw Hat crew. And, members of the crew tend to interact most with other crew members who fall within the same groups.

For example, look at Zoro and Sanji. They’re both members of the “monster trio” with Luffy, so those three interact a lot. Sanji’s also part of a group that includes Robin and Nami since he loves women. And, Zoro is in the “original East Blue crew” group with Nami, so he interacts with her, too. But, Zoro rarely interacts with Robin. They don’t share a group.

Now, why am I bringing up these groups? Because one of my favorite groups is the “post-East Blue” group. Robin, Chopper, Brook, Franky, and Jinbe are the five in this group. And, what I like about this group is that, for the most part, they’re older.

Robin, Brook, Franky, and Jinbe are all older than the original East Blue crew. Robin’s the youngest of those four, and she’s still 9 years older than Zoro, the oldest of the original crew. But, then, there’s Chopper — the real reason why I like this group.

Chopper is the youngest Straw Hat. But, he’s often grouped with the older crew members. And, this leads to some of my favorite inter-crew moments. I love seeing Chopper with Robin. Chopper with Franky and Brook are pretty good too. And now that Jinbe’s on the crew, Chopper and Jinbe is another pairing I love.

Final Thoughts

Nanahoshi Will Never Return Home

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Part 2 Episode 15 was one of those episodes that goes by too fast. I thought the episode was only halfway over when the end credits began rolling. Though, the credits were a bit earlier than normal in this episode.

So, why did this episode feel so short? I’m not entirely sure. A lot of the time, when episodes feel short, it’s because there’s a lot of action. That wasn’t the case here. Most of the episode was about Nanahoshi’s magic circle experiments.

Instead, my guess is that it felt short because I kept anticipating that something would happen. That something never did end up happening. But, I think the anticipation made me not realize how far into the episode I was. And, by something happening, I mean something bad — like Nanahoshi taking her own life.

Why would Nanahoshi take her own life, though? Well, as we saw, after this latest failure, Nanahoshi felt like she’d never succeed. She felt like she’d never be able to go back home. And because of that, she seemed to have been contemplating ending it all.

Unlike Rudeus, Nanahoshi never really assimilated into life within this world. But, that’s not exactly her fault. We need to remember that their situations are very different. Rudeus was reborn into this world and grew up here for about 18 years. Nanahoshi was transported to this world and has only been here for about five years.

From the very start, Nanahoshi has been trying to find a way back home. Rudeus hasn’t. He has family and friends here — things he doesn’t have back in his old world. Nanahoshi could make friends. But, she doesn’t have a family to support her. In her mind, she’s all alone.

Layering Summoning Circles

It now looks like Nanahoshi isn’t going to end her own life, thanks to the work of Rudeus and his friends. He had Zanoba, Elinalise, and Cliff take a look at her magic circle. And, together, they came up with a way to fix it.

Their solution was a pretty simple one, though it required thinking “outside the box.” Why use a single, very complex magic circle when you could use multiple, simple magic circles? By layering magic circles on top of each other, you can have them work as if they were one circle.

When testing this new method, Nanahoshi (with Rudeus’s mana) managed to summon a plastic bottle. A plastic bottle is a simple object. But, it’s a simple object that doesn’t exist in this world. So, it’s proof that they were able to summon something from their old world — the first step in Nanahoshi’s plan.

After this success, Nanahoshi says she’ll be able to summon whatever she wants into this world. However, that’s not what her end goal is. Her end goal is to reverse summon herself back into her old world. Do you think she’s going to succeed?

The way I see it, there are four possibilities. The first is that Nanahoshi can’t reverse summon herself and learns to live in this world. She’ll become friends with Rudeus’s friends and can summon items from her old world as she pleases. That’s the least interesting option.

The second is that she succeeds and eventually returns to her old world. The third is that she returns to her old world, and Rudeus gets caught up in the summoning. And, the fourth is that she dies in a horrific summoning accident. I’m hoping for that one. Things have been going too well for too long.

Ruijerd and the Little Sisters

I mentioned that the end credits started a bit earlier than usual in this episode. That was to make room for a post-credits scene, which I hope you didn’t skip. At the very end of the episode, Norn and Aisha show up at Rudeus’s doorstep.

Norn is easy to remember. But, I always forget that Aisha is the child and not the maid whom Paul knocked up. That’s Lilia. I don’t know why I always think Aisha is the mother and not the daughter, but I do. Anyway, Norn and Aisha are the two who are here.

Of course, we already knew that these two were going to show up at some point this season. The cover art for this half of the season features them both in Rudeus and Sylphie’s house. And, we also see this in the OP.

The big surprise is the person who brought Norn and Aisha to Rudeus’s home — Ruijerd. When Paul mentioned that a man Rudeus knew was escorting them, I had no idea who it could be. I actually forgot about Ruijerd in that moment, despite it being so obvious in hindsight.

Like, what other male character could it be? It could have been the Dedoldian leader, I guess. But, I don’t think Paul knows him. There are very few male characters whom both Paul and Rudeus know. And, the majority of them are members of Paul’s party. So, it wouldn’t have been surprising for Paul to run into them.

Ruijerd, though, now that is a surprise. I wonder if he’s going to have any information for Rudeus about what Eris is up to. I know he separated from Rudeus and Eris before they split up. But, he may have come across her training.

Final Thoughts

Diablo Causes a Civil War

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 3 Episode 51 was a very boring episode. Nothing really happened. It was all about Rimuru talking to his various retainers about mundane things. I wouldn’t even say any of these boring conversations were necessary.

So, I’ve picked out three of the more interesting parts of the episode to discuss this week. First up, we have the civil war Diablo’s trying to cause within Falmuth. I thought he was trying to install a puppet government. But, no. He has bigger plans.

I guess the ultimate goal is still to install a puppet government. After all, Rimuru had mentioned wanting to crown Youm as the King of Falmuth. That may still eventually happen. But, before we get there, Diablo’s going to have the lords of Falmuth tear themselves apart in a civil war.

How is he planning to do this? As we know, the lords don’t want to pay reparations to Tempest. Because of this, they’ve pushed the majority of the payment onto the former king. And, it’s likely that they would want to punish the former king even further for putting them in this situation.

However, the former king is now a viscount in a region bordering where Youm’s party is from. So, the plan is for Youm’s group (backed by a portion of Tempest’s military) will intervene when something happens. This will then lead to the deaths or imprisonment of all the problem lords.

At least, that’s my understanding of the situation. It’s a way for Youm to secure the throne of Falmuth without a full-blown coup. He’ll be positioned as the savior of the country, taking it back from the lords who want to hoard wealth and power.

Milim Just Wants Tasty Food

As I said, not much happened in this episode. So, next, let’s talk about Milim’s desire for tasty food. She gets all her food from offerings from her followers. But, her followers don’t cook the food — they simply offer raw ingredients.

In the past, that was fine. Either Milim hadn’t had good food before. Or, more likely, she’d only had it during special occasions, such as during Walpurgis. And, because of that, she didn’t mind all that much about getting raw food offerings. But, that’s changed thanks to Rimuru.

Rimuru introduced her to a lot of new, tasty foods. He also showed her that there’s no reason why she can’t have good food for every meal. So, now, Milim’s tired of the same old raw food. She wants her followers to prepare meals for her that she actually wants to eat.

Of course, Milim could simply tell her followers that they need to cook the food they offer to her. However, as Rimuru pointed out, Milim’s not the kind of person to do that. She may be a powerful demon lord, but she doesn’t want to come off as ungrateful.

This is where her scheme comes in. The next time Milim visits Tempest, she’s going to bring a few of her retainers with her. And, while they’re there, Rimuru is going to have his people teach Milim’s people how to cook. Once they see how good the cooked food is, they’ll want to offer it to Milim themselves.

Will this plan work out? I have no idea and I don’t care. I can’t see this being an important part of the series. I’m sure it will come up again whenever Milim visits Tempest next. But, I doubt anything significant will come of it.

More Monsters in the Nation of Tempest

Toward the end of Episode 51, we find out that Rimuru wasn’t previously the ruler of the whole Jura Forest. Apparently, he was only the ruler of the part of the forest that sits on one side of the river. There’s even more forest to rule.

Now that he’s an official Demon Lord, though, the other Demon Lords gave him the entire forest as his domain. That means all the monsters that live in the other half of the forest now need Rimuru’s permission to live there.

Obviously, Rimuru would allow those monsters to keep living there as they always have. He’s not going to evict them from their lands. But, he can also now tax those monsters for living within his nation. And, he’ll be expected to use his power and influence to protect them.

Currently, there are Goblins, Orcs, Lizardmen, and Wolves that make up the core Tempest population. Humans, Dwarves, and some other races also live there. But, those four races make up the majority of Tempest’s citizens. Now, there are going to be even more monster races under Rimuru’s control. So, let’s meet them.

According to the preview of these races, there appear to be six or seven new additions. There are Minotaurs, Horsemen (not Centaurs), Rabbit people, Tengu, Bug people, and small children. Yeah, one of the “new races” we see pictured just looks like a human child, so I don’t know what they’re supposed to be.

I assume the majority of these races come from across the river. But, the Tengu are a little different. We know they live on top of some mountains Tempest is building a road passed. So, I guess Rimuru — via Benimaru — is going to bring the Tengu into Tempest, as well.

Final Thoughts

Kazuma’s New Business Venture

KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! 3 Episode 2 is officially here. It was unofficially here about two weeks ago when the first two episodes were leaked. But, I held off watching it until now. I prefer watching the episodes when they actually air.

If you’re someone who watched the episode early. Well, it looks like you’ll have to wait one week longer than the rest of us for Episode 3 because that one wasn’t leaked. Was it worth it? I don’t see how it would be.

Anyway, at the start of Episode 2, we see Kazuma’s new business venture in partnership with Wiz’s shop. In one of the previous seasons, we saw him bring the kotatsu to this world. Now, he’s brought another piece of modern comfort: lighters. That’s right, the days of carrying around flint to start fires are over!

When you think about it, Kazuma should really be focusing on these business ventures if he wants to be rich. He has all this knowledge of technology from our world that he could recreate. He’s also always complaining about the danger he’s put in when adventuring. So, why not quit and become an inventor?

It’s not like he has to be an engineer to be successful at this. There are plenty of simple objects he could reproduce — or have others reproduce on his behalf. These inventions also don’t have to be physical objects. They could be businesses.

Imagine how much money Kazuma could make if he opened a maid cafe featuring Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness. Well, okay, that might not work out. I wouldn’t actually trust those three to work with my customers. So, the first step may be to ditch them and then work on his business.

Making a Good First Impression

I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting Megumin and Aqua to clean up as well as they did. Darkness makes sense. Despite her personality, she is a member of the nobility. She grew up in that world, so she gets it.

Megumin and Aqua, however, aren’t two who I expect to be able to handle the kind of situation they were put in. But, they did a pretty good job. With the help of Darkness’s maid, they got nice outfits to wear. And, overall, they behaved themselves in front of the princess.

Yes, Megumin still did her chuuni introduction and Aqua tried to perform a party trick. But, they didn’t completely go off the rails, as I expected them to. Megumin didn’t fire off any explosion magic and Aqua didn’t hurl insults at the princess. With that in mind, they made good first impressions.

Even later during the dinner party when Iris insults Kazuma, Megumin doesn’t get involved. She wanted to — she really wanted to. But, she didn’t. Though, I wonder what she would have even done. She didn’t have her staff with her. Can she use explosion magic without it?

Or, was she planning on saying some mean things back to the princess? I could definitely see her doing that. And, not in the same way that Aqua would say mean things to the princess. Aqua wouldn’t do that on behalf of Kazuma. She’d do it for herself.

Also, I wonder why Darkness was so worried about meeting with the princess. In my review of Episode 1, I predicted that the princess might try to steal Kazuma from her. That is what happened. However, I thought that was going to be her plan all along.

I don’t know if Princess Iris’s name is supposed to be a Monogatari reference. Or, maybe I’m just Monogatari pilled. But, Iris Stylish-Sword Belzerg definitely has Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade vibes. Stylish-Sword has to be a reference to Heart-Under-Blade, right?

Anyway, Iris wasn’t at all what I was expecting. I wasn’t expecting her to be so young. And, I wasn’t expecting her to be so shy. I assumed she’d be in her late teens or twenties. Perhaps somewhere between Kazuma’s and Darkness’s ages. I’m pretty sure Darkness is a few years older than Kazuma.

Since Iris extended this invitation to Kazuma, I also thought she’d be far more forward. I expected her to be the one engaging him rather than going through her guards as mediators. And, well, as I already said, I don’t see what Darkness was all that worried about.

Of course, in the end, Iris does become a bit more forward. As she and her knights are teleporting away, she grabs Kazuma and brings him with them. Her reason for doing this is that she wants him to tell her more of his adventuring stories. But, where are things going to go from here?

Is Kazuma going to convince her to send him back? He could argue that if she keeps him there, he won’t be able to go on adventures and tell her new stories in the future. Or, are Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness going to launch a rescue mission?

My early prediction is a combination of both. I’m thinking that Kazuma will get Iris to send him back right before the other three head out to save him. However, that might not be the case. The royal castle might be the new setting for much of Season 3.

Final Thoughts
